Germany comeback breaks Irish hearts in U19 European Championships

Germany came from behind to break Irish hearts in yesterday’s Under-19 European Championships Group B clash in Lithuania.
The Girls in Green secured a first-half breakthrough when Lia O’Leary volleyed them in front, but goals late in the second-half from substitutes Leonie Schetter and Laila Portella gave Germany all three points.
Ireland’s hopes of a semi-final spot now rest on their clash on Sunday with the Netherlands.

Heading into yesterday’s game after a scoreless draw with Spain, Ireland opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when O’Leary finished from Meabh Russell’s back-post delivery.
Germany piled on the pressure and struck the upright on 65 minutes through Tessa Blumenberg.
Six minutes later they levelled the score, when Schetter picked the ball up on the right side and drove an unstoppable shot past Athlone Town goalkeeper Katie Keane.
Portella put Germany in front in the 77th minute when she beat Keane to a Blumenberg cross and directed the ball into the net.
