Supercomputer predicts The Ope

Rory McIlroy has just a 3% chance of winning The Open at Royal Troon, a supercomputer has predicted.

The Holywood man comes into the tournament as one of the leading favourites following his US Open heartbreak last month.

McIlroy is aiming to end his ten-year major drought after coming agonisingly close to winning the US Open last month. The Holywood man briefly held a two-shot lead at Pinehurst with five holes to play but bogeyed three of the last four, missing very short putts on the 16th and 18th to finish a shot behind Bryson DeChambeau.

It was the 35-year-old’s best chance to win his first major since 2014 and brought back painful memories of squandering a four-shot lead in the final round of the 2011 Masters with a closing 80.

On that occasion McIlroy bounced back to win the US Open two months later and the Irishman can respond even quicker 14 years on, with the 152nd Open getting under way at Royal Troon just 32 days after his hasty exit from Pinehurst.

However, the Grosvenor Sport SuperComputer gives McIlroy just a 3% chance of lifting the Claret Jug for a second time, leaving him fifth behind Bryson DeChambeau (12.2%), Ludvig Aberg (6.1%, world number one Scottie Scheffler (4%) and Tommy Fleetwood (3.9%) on the list.

Meanwhile, Scot and home favourite Robert MacIntyre has a 1.4% chance of winning at Troon and there’s a 1.4% likelihood of 2019 Open winner Shane Lowry going all the way.

The supercomputer simulates The Open 10,000 times to capture a wide range of potential outcomes. By doing so, it records the results of every simulated event, enabling analysis of possible winners, their winning margins, and the most common winning scenarios.

While the model and code provide valuable insights, it is important to understand the number of variables that can influence the outcome of an event, such as weather conditions, player health, and mental state.
