A man walking home was struck and killed by thugs in a suspected stolen car in North Co Dublin. The man, who is in his 40s, is believed to have been walking home on the coast road in Baldoyle, Dublin 13, when he was struck by a speeding car in a horrific incident before 1am on Wednesday morning.

It is understood that the vehicle involved is suspected to have earlier been stolen from a nearby address - and came upon a Garda car. Sources say the Garda car encountered the suspected stolen vehicle, tried to get the driver to stop, but they failed to do so.

The Garda car then pursued the vehicle but lost sight of it - with the horrific fatal crash then subsequently occurring. Sources say it took officers a period of time to formally identify the deceased man, who was killed at the scene.

The vehicle involved in the incident was subsequently recovered abandoned nearby. Gardai say they are now investigating the incident as a fatal hit and run - and it has also been referred to GSOC, due to the prior Garda involvement.
