Eleven little pups were rescued after they were dumped in a turf bag in bushes in Co Donegal. The new-born pups were found by a passer-by in the Carrigart area on Monday evening.

The woman brought the pups to the local Animals in Need Donegal rescue charity to be cared for. Tragically, just four of the collie pups managed to survive the ordeal. The charity is now caring for the surviving pups and making every effort to ensure they survive.

A spokesperson for the charity said they are appalled at the actions of the dog’s owner. They praised the woman who found the pups but said what the owner had done was “beyond despicable.” The spokesperson said "Imagine the horror and trauma of the young woman who came across the bag and had to sort through the bodies and try to save the living ones who were snuggled in among the six dead bodies of their siblings.

"It's one thing for your dog not to be spayed and let her have pups but to cruelly rip the new-born pups away from her and dump them in an old turf bag with a big rock in a deserted place is beyond despicable." The charity is now working to make sure the four surviving pups survive.

The charity spokesperson added that the dog who gave birth to the pups also needs to be checked over considering how cruelly the pups were simply dumped.

"All we can think about is the fear, the hunger, the cold and the dread they must have been feeling. But where is the mum? Imagine how she must be feeling. The hope that her owners will be responsible and get her spayed or even checked over by the vet is probably wasted but we hope they will do the right thing.

"If anyone knows of a collie or collie cross bitch in that area that looks like she has recently given birth please reach out to us, ISPCA or the gardai. The remaining four pups are being looked after by an experienced foster care and we are hoping against hope that they'll pull through."

Donations to support Animals in Need Donegal are being accepted.
