Celtic legend Neil Lennon's son Gallagher Lennon captained the Northern Ireland team for the first time, describing it as "an absolute honour."

The 18-year-old midfielder, who plays club football for St Mirren, followed in his father's footsteps, taking the armband as the Northern Irish U-19 side began their UEFA U-19 Championship campaign against Ukraine on Monday night. Lennon played the full 90 minutes of the goalless draw and will play next against the reigning champions Italy on Thursday evening.

The teenager reflected on a great night for him and his family and is raring to put the armband on once again.

"It's an absolute honour," said Lennon. "Of course my dad did it and to somewhat even follow in his big footsteps, if I can do a little bit of that, I'd be proud.

"It's always a proud moment when you can step in and lead a team out in front of what was a great crowd tonight as well. It was a real honour. This is a great tournament, a great event and it was against a good team as well."

Lennon was born in Glasgow in 2005 during his dad's spell with Celtic. He started off his own footballing career with Partick Thistle before moving to St Mirren.

He has had loan spells at Linlithgow Rose and Dumbarton in recent seasons. Lennon will be hoping making an impression during this international tournament will help him get an opportunity under Stephen Robinson at club level.
