Shocking comments have emerged by first-term Senator J.D. Vance, who has just been selected as Donald Trump's vice-presidential running mate. In a speech, he labelled the UK as the world's first "Islamist country" with nuclear arms.

Trump announced this unexpected pick for VP nominee on Monday, following an attempt on his life at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. The Ohio Senator, 39-year-old Vance, could be installed as US Vice President in less than six months if the former President wins in November.

Vance made the remarks while describing a bizarre interaction with a friend, where the first-term senator revealed they had been contemplating which genuine "Islamist country" would be the first to attain nuclear weaponry. In a speech made to a hard right audience, Vance declared: "We finally decided that it's actually the UK - since Labour just took over," to peals of laughter among attendees, reports the Mirror.

His startling remark, made even more peculiar considering the already-nuclear-capable Islamic country Pakistan, came in response to the Labour party's sweeping victory at the July 4 General Election. These comments were voiced during the National Conservatism conference held this week, known to be a regular gathering hotspot for the nationalist right in America and runs simultaneously to the Republican National Convention.

Key British politicians are currently stateside this week, attending the Republican convention in Milwaukee. Notable mentions include former PM Liz Truss and new MP Nigel Farage.

They will witness the crowning moment of Donald Trump as the party's prospective nominee, flanked by his Vice President choice who seemingly believes the UK is an Islamist nation.

These comments could make navigating a potential Trump comeback more difficult for new Labour Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, who has reportedly been trying to mend ties between Labour and the Trump clan in recent months. In an intentional move signalling their future course of action, Sir Keir Starmer even phoned candidate Trump, after his close shave with a would-be assassin during a campaign rally last Saturday.

Speaking at the National Conservatism conference, aspiring Vice-presidential candidate Vance stated: "By the way, I have to beat up on the UK for one additional thing. I was talking with a friend recently and we were talking about one of the big dangers in the world of course is nuclear proliferation, and of course the Biden administration doesn't care about it."

"And I was talking about, you know, what is the first truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon? Maybe it is Iran, maybe Pakistan already kind of counts, and then we finally decided that it's actually the UK - since Labour just took over."

However, Politico Europe reports that multiple meetings have occurred in the recent past between Vance and Lammy, with the UK Foreign Secretary said to be enamoured by the Senator's memoir-turned-film 'Hillbilly Elegy'.

These lightly veiled comments are bound to weigh heavily upon the "special relationship" shared by the UK and the US, wherein we have seen both nations toeing the same line on international policy post World War II.

British journalist turned US political commentator Mehdi Hasan slammed the remarks as "brazen Islamophobia".

In his first public appearance since the assassination attempt, former President Donald Trump was spotted with a bandage over his ear, raising his fist in defiance to the cheers of "We love you Trump" from the RNC crowd, with Senator Vance by his side.

Trump's choice for VP warned his "Tory friends" to take control of the Labour surge following the Conservative Party's crushing defeat in the General Election.

On Truth Social, Trump announced his VP pick, stating: "After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio."

Trump lauded Vance's achievements, highlighting: "J.D. honourably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association.

"J.D's book, 'Hillbilly Elegy,' became a Major bestseller and movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our country."
