The FAI on Monday declined several times to say whether they were indemnified against potential claims arising from the allegations of improper behaviour in Irish football in the 1990s.

An RTÉ Investigations/Sunday Independent investigation spoke to a number of former female players - senior internationals and participants on a women-only FÁS Course - and heard allegations made against some male coaches.

Asked whether the Association was covered against potential claims for the alleged mental trauma suffered by the players, neither Interim CEO David Courell nor People and Culture Director answered.

“As we said before this is an on-going investigation so it’s important that we respect that investigation,” said Rafferty. “Unfortunately, we can’t comment at the moment.”

When the question was asked again, Courell replied: “I’m afraid again, as Aoife has mentioned, the reality is we are currently in a live garda investigation, so we have to let that run its course.”

When it was put to them that addressing the subject of insurance would not impact any garda investigation, Courell replied: “I understand the question, but unfortunately we are not going to respond to it this morning.”

He later said: “I don’t mean to be as curt as that. The reality is that it’s a very wide-ranging question.

“There are different situations that may arise and each of those would have to be handled on a case-by-case basis with our respective insurers.”
