Vogue Williams' husband Spencer Matthews has opened up about a horror, near-fatal miss he had while training for his mammoth marathon challenge.

The former Made In Chelsea star, 35, is embarking on a mission to run 30 marathons in 30 days in the desert, for a total of 1,266km, and said he wants to prove "anyone can do interesting things".

But while training in Jordan for the huge challenge, the father-of-three reveals things took a very "hairy turn" during their recce "that could have been fatal".

He wrote on Instagram: "Our epic Ahaimer Canyon recce run took a bit of a hairy turn quite early on that could have been fatal. It's experiences like these that make planning a route accurately important... We took a wrong turn whilst descending from the top ridge of the canyon to the river bed and had to climb down a number of increasingly steep faces.

"These felt quite loose and dangerous and we were both surprised that this might be the route. We proceeded on down anyway and were met with a 20ft vertical drop and used our stretched out bodies to fill the gap to get down it only to find that we were then in a dead-end cave.

"With no service in the area, our only way out was back up and if we didn't have the use of each other's bodies to get out of there, I'd say there's a good chance that we would still be there now with no real hope of being found.

"The team would have assumed that we were on track to be picked up 30km later and wouldn't have known where we went wrong.

"We thankfully were able to figure out a way back up, found the correct way down and enjoyed one of the best runs we've ever had. (Not many people have had the pleasure of running the length of this incredible valley). When we come back at the end of July for the World Record Attempt we won't make the same mistake!!"

Spencer told ITV’s Lorraine last month: "I’ve done a few of these ultras before. It’s a love/hate thing, but I was looking to do more.

"I’ve always been really curious about how far the mind and body can go and I really wanted to design and create a challenge that would be a ‘world first’, so this would be a world record if achieved."

Discussing the temperature when he embarks on the fundraising challenge, he said: "It’s going to be in the mid-40Cs.

"It has to be 100 per cent on sand. If my feet leave sand at any point, that marathon for that day is then void, and for it to be a world record, the 30 have to be consecutive.

"I’m working with incredible people and a local team in Jordan, who will design the route ahead of being there.

"But the entire 1,266km has to be on sand which, of course, makes it that bit harder."
