Despite narrowly missing out on the US Open title in a heart-wrenching turn of events, Rory McIlroy has at least managed to boost his already impressive net worth.

The Northern Irish golfer was leading Bryson DeChambeau by two strokes with just five holes left to play, but missed par putts on the 16th and 18th holes allowed DeChambeau to overtake him and snatch the trophy. The American's victory at the weekend marked his second major win in four years, having previously won the US Open in 2020 at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, New York.

Despite finishing as runner-up, McIlroy still managed to significantly increase his net worth, taking home a consolation prize of $2.32million (£1.83million). Prior to the tournament, the Sunday Times' Rich List reported that the 35-year-old had an astonishing net worth of £225million.

This figure has now been boosted by almost £2million, although this will be little comfort to McIlroy after his disappointing finish in North Carolina on Sunday night. It is reported that he earned more than £65million alone in 2023, with a large chunk coming from sponsorship deals with Nike, TaylorMade and Omega.

Had he won the US Open at the weekend, he would have added a further $4,300,000 (£3,392,270) to his career earnings - the prize that was ultimately taken home by 30-year-old DeChambeau, reports the Express. Rory's US Open hopes were dashed after a series of unfortunate bogeys in the final stretch – with two missed short putts for par in his last four holes sealing his fate.

DeChambeau, on the other hand, nailed a crucial putt from around four feet to clinch the title, leaving McIlroy to retreat to the locker room alongside his caddie as the ball sank. Since bagging his fourth major at the 2014 US PGA Championship, McIlroy has been close but no cigar, finishing second or tied for second in four major tournaments and racking up 21 top-10 finishes without adding to his top-tier championship tally.

He gave the presentation ceremony at Pinehurst a miss on Sunday and dodged the press entirely. Clips circulating on social media captured him making a swift departure post DeChambeau's triumph, sparking debate among fans online.

Bryson, however, was full of praise for his opponent during his press conference, confidently stating: "He'll win multiple more major championships. There's no doubt." He also added: "I think that fire in him is going to continue to grow."
