How much did Rory McIlroy win?

It won't be much consolation to Rory McIlroy, but his second-place finish in the US Open saw him pocket €2.17 million.

When McIlroy went two shots clear on the back at Pinehurst No. 2, it looked like his dream of ending his ten-year major drought was about to come true.

But the dream turned into a nightmare when missed short putts on the 16th and 18th hole saw him hand the title to Bryson DeChambeau.

A distraught McIlroy left the course without speaking to the media and could not hide the dejection on his face.

The winner's trophy and the first prize money of €4.01 million went to the American, who was winning the US Open for the first time.

Prior to the tournament, the Sunday Times' Rich List reported that the 35-year-old had an astonishing net worth of €266 million.

That figure has risen thanks to another big finish in a major for McIlroy, although that will be scant comfort for the Holywood golfer.

DeChambeau predicts a haunted-looking McIlroy will recover from his latest major disaster to break his long drought.

"I'm sure it will fuel Rory's fire even more," he stated. He's a strong-minded individual. For me, it was knowing how good my game is, how great of a place it's in, and just continuing to execute knowing the statistics would eventually fall my way. Still hope. Golf, it's a game of luck. There's a lot of luck that has to happen and go your way out there.

"I knew if I could give my 100% effort on every single shot, I'd give myself a good chance this week - just like I did at the PGA, just like I did at the Masters."
