Most of the country can look forward to settled weather with warmer temperatures and good sunny spells this week – but don’t make plans for the weekend just yet, as a big change could be just around the corner.

The mercury is expected to push up towards 23 degrees in the coming days with the best of the week’s weather forecast from Wednesday onwards, as an area of high pressure builds.

However, Alan O’Reilly of the Carlow Weather social media channel has warned of “uncertainty” surrounding conditions on Friday and into the weekend. Met Éireann is also expecting widespread rain to spread from the west.

There’s some patchy drizzle in store this morning although it’ll remain bright and dry in the south. That sunny, dry weather will spread elsewhere this afternoon, and temperatures should reach up to 18 degrees.

Similarly, tomorrow will start with showers in some places but these will give way to sunshine and dry conditions in most areas. It looks like Wednesday and Thursday will be the best days of the week, as forecasters remain less certain and less hopeful about Friday onwards.

Here’s the forecast for the coming days from Met Éireann:

Monday

A little cloudy this morning with some patchy drizzle in the north but some early bright spells further south. Sunny and largely dry weather will develop later this afternoon. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in a light northerly breeze.

A mix of cloudy periods and clear spells tonight with a light northerly breeze. A few light showers will drift in overnight but most areas will stay dry. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

Tuesday

Cloudy with a few light showers in the morning but they will quickly die out. Sunny spells will develop from the afternoon and it'll stay mostly dry apart from the odd light shower. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees in a light northerly breeze.

Generally dry on Tuesday night with cloud breaking up during the evening with longer clear spells overnight. More cloud will develop across northern counties before dawn however. A light northerly breeze and lows of 5 to 8 degrees.

Wednesday

A mostly cloudy day but some bright and sunny spells will develop across southern and eastern counties later in the afternoon. Light northerly breezes and highs of 16 to 20 degrees.

Long clear spells in the south and east but cloud will push in across the west and north during the night. Largely dry with light winds and lows of 7 to 10 degrees.

Thursday

Cloudy periods and sunny spells, the best of which will be in the east and south. A spell of rain will move in over counites in the far north for a time but staying largely dry elsewhere with southwesterly breezes and highs of 18 to 22 degrees.

Friday

Cloudy with a few showers at first but some sunny spells in the east. Rain will push in across western counties later in the afternoon, becoming widespread by evening. Highs of 19 to 23 degrees and moderate southwesterly winds.
