Hurling permutations and stand

The final round of group games take place in both the Munster and Leinster Championships this afternoon, with plenty to play for in both.

The Leinster games take place at 2pm and see Galway face Dublin, Kilkenny take on Wexford and Antrim clash with Carlow. Meanwhile in Munster, Limerick collide with Waterford and Tipperary host Clare. Both of those matches have throw-in times of 4pm.

Incredibly, 10 out of the 11 teams still having something to play for. Here are all the permutations:

MUNSTER

Limerick v Waterford; Tipperary v Clare; Cork bye.

Limerick

A win or draw will secure them a Munster final spot. Lose and they’ll be looking for an unlikely favour from Tipperary.

If they were to fall short and Clare beat Tipperary, it would leave both them and Cork level on four points but Cork would go through to a preliminary quarter-final in third place by virtue of their head-to-head record against Limerick, who would drop out of the Championship.

Cork

They have completed their four games and now must wait and see.

A Munster final appears unlikely as it would require Clare to lose to already eliminated Tipperary coupled with a draw between Limerick and Waterford, in which scenario Cork would hold second place on scoring difference and meet the holders in the decider.

Wins for Clare and Waterford would see Cork finish third ahead of Limerick on head-to-head.

The nightmare scenario for Cork is a draw between Waterford and Limerick along with Clare beating or drawing with Tipperary as they would slip to fourth and out of the Championship given that Waterford would have the edge on them on head-to-head.

Clare

It’s pretty straightforward for Clare: win or draw with Tipperary and they’ll be assured of a Munster final spot.

If they lose, they’ll need Limerick to beat Waterford to stay afloat as even a draw in that game coupled with a Clare defeat would see Brian Lohan’s side drop to fourth and out of the Championship on scoring difference.

Waterford

Again, the arithmetic is pretty simple here. If Waterford beat Limerick they’ll be in the Munster final.

Draw and they’ll finish third.

Lose and they’re out of the Championship.

Tipperary

With no win from three games, they cannot finish in the top three regardless of how their final game with Clare plays out. Their scoring difference is so far adrift of Waterford’s that even if they close with a win and the Deise lose to Limerick, Tipp will still almost certainly finish bottom.

LEINSTER

Kilkenny v Wexford; Galway v Dublin; Antrim v Carlow.

Kilkenny

Their place in the knockout stages is assured as even if they were to lose to Wexford and Galway-Dublin was a draw, then Galway, Dublin and Kilkenny would each finish on six points. In that scenario in Leinster, teams are separated by how they performed against each other and Kilkenny would top that mini-league with three points.

If they lose and Galway-Dublin produces a winner, they will finish third but a win or a draw for Kilkenny assures them of a Leinster final spot regardless of what happens elsewhere.

Wexford

Beat Kilkenny and they’re in a Leinster final. Draw and they’ll finish third at least.

If they lose and Galway and Dublin draw, they would be out as both of those counties would then move ahead of them.

If Dublin win, Wexford would still go through in third with a defeat to Kilkenny as their head-to-head advantage over Galway would stand to them.

Wins for Kilkenny and Galway would see scoring difference come into play to separate Wexford and Dublin, who drew last month. Wexford are currently nine points better off in that respect after their runaway win over Carlow.

Dublin

They’ll reach a first Leinster final since 2021 if they beat Galway. A draw would guarantee them a preliminary quarter-final spot at least and would see them into the final if Kilkenny beat Wexford.

Lose and they’ll be out of the Championship unless Wexford suffer a far bigger beating in Kilkenny to overturn the +9 scoring difference advantage that they currently hold over Dublin.

Galway

Galway are in a similar position to Dublin but with slightly less room for manoeuvre given their weaker scoring difference.

A win over Dublin will put them into the Leinster final. A draw would secure third place as long as the Kilkenny-Wexford game didn’t also end level.

If they lose, their summer is over.

Antrim

Their defeat to Galway ended their prospects of progressing in the Championship and it’s now just a matter of whether they can preserve their top tier status for 2025. A win or draw at home to Carlow will do that.

Carlow

It’s win or bust for Carlow as they travel to Corrigan Park next Sunday. Anything less than a victory will mean immediate relegation to the Joe McDonagh Cup having won that competition last year.
