A conference titled Current Issues of the Situation of Hungarians in Slovakia – from a Social Science Approach was held at J. Selye University in Komárno (Komárom) to discuss the findings of a research project on the challenges faced by the Hungarian community in Slovakia, reports Ma7.
The event, supported by Hungary’s State Secretariat for National Policy and the Gábor Bethlen Foundation, included distinguished speakers such as Lőrinc Nacsa, Secretary of State for National Policy, and Csaba Balogh, Hungary’s Ambassador to Slovakia.
The research highlighted alarming statistics, including a shrinking Hungarian population in Slovakia, expected to drop below 400,000 by the next census.
The Hungarian community in Slovakia is ageing, and the number of Hungarian school-leavers has halved over the last twenty years,”
said Komárno’s Mayor Béla Keszegh.
László Gubík, President of the Hungarian Alliance, stressed the need for “professional solutions” to address these pressing issues, while also advocating for stronger community building and unity.
Lőrinc Nacsa, in his address, underlined the importance of the institutional system for the survival of the Hungarian minority.
The strength of the community is shown by the institutional network, and therefore this network must be further developed,” he emphasized.
He also highlighted Hungary’s support for educational institutions, such as J. Selye University, which plays a vital role in preserving Hungarian identity through education.
The conference focused on finding solutions to ensure the prosperity of the Hungarian community in Slovakia. Mr. Nacsa concluded,
our goal is not only to preserve the Hungarian minority in Slovakia but also to increase its prosperity,” urging continued government action.
The event fostered vital dialogue between experts, policymakers, and the community, emphasizing the need for ongoing support and unity to safeguard the future of the Hungarian minority in Slovakia.
