A new cross-border cycle route development project is being launched in cooperation with national parks on both sides of the Austrian-Hungarian border, reports Turizmus.com.

One of the outstanding tourist attractions of the Lake Neusiedl region is the ‘Neusiedl Cycle Route’ bypassing the lake across the border. However, there is still a big difference in the ecotourism potential of the two sides. This is particularly true for cycling tourism: while the Neusiedl shore is bustling in the season and many villages have lost their rural character, with numerous services for cyclists, the Hanság on the Hungarian side is “too quiet.”

The villages here have preserved their appearance from decades ago, with flooded wetlands where you can admire the wildlife,

but the lack of capacity means you have to choose your accommodation well in advance, writes the tourism portal, quoting GD Consulting.

There is still a lot of untapped potential for cycling and ecotourism in general in the Hanság. In the course of the development of the cycling route, that is now being launched in partnership with the 30-year-old cross-border Fertő-Hanság/Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park and Nordburgenland Tourismus,

nearly 160 km of a new ‘National Park Cycling Route’ will be marked and signposted.

The connecting points between the two national park sides will be the Baron Gustav Berg and Andau bridges across the main Hanság canal.

At the project’s conference in mid-November, invited experts presented current trends in cycling tourism and why the Seewinkel (FertÅ‘zug) and Hanság regions are unique for cyclists seeking proximity to nature and a deeper experience. The Interreg project also aims to put the “emerging” cycling destination on the cycling map of Austria and Hungary, as well as of Europe, in close cooperation with the regional operators.
