The National Research Infrastructure survey for 2023-2024 has concluded, with 111 certified research infrastructures in Hungary for 2024. Of the 59 new infrastructures qualified, 21 are from HUN-REN’s (Hungarian Research Network) institutes, marking significant growth in the country’s research capabilities.

According to a statement published on HUN-REN’s website, the survey, conducted between January and March 2024, involved the evaluation of 119 new research infrastructures. The National Research Infrastructure Committee invited applications from high-priority domestic infrastructures not among the top performers in the 2021 survey. The submissions were assessed based on ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) classifications, including criteria such as scientific excellence, uniqueness, national strategic importance, international collaboration, and industrial innovation.

Among the newly qualified research infrastructures, HUN-REN institutes received recognition across various fields.

In energy, the HUN-REN Nuclear Materials Laboratory earned an excellent rating. The HUN-REN Research Center for Astronomy and Earth Sciences, including the Hungarian National Seismological Network and the Balaton Limnological Research Institute, received excellent ratings for their environmental research. Key achievements in health and food sciences include the HUN-REN Medical Genetic Engineering Department and the HUN-REN Complex Molecular and Cell Biology Center, both of which were awarded excellent ratings. In physical sciences, the Research Laboratory for Micro- and Nanotechnology at the HUN-REN Research Center for Energy Sciences was recognized for excellence.

As a result of the multi-stage evaluation process, the NKIB identified 31 new excellent research infrastructures (CIs), 15 excellent CI networks, and 11 promising CIs. It also proposed the creation of 2 promising CI networks, bringing the total to 59 new titles. With the research infrastructures certified in 2021, Hungary will have 111 certified domestic research infrastructures by 2024.

The total of 111 certified research infrastructures showcases Hungary’s growing capacity for world-class research. With these new qualifications, Hungary is poised to strengthen its position in international research collaborations and innovation.
