This summer, almost a third of all overnight stays in Hungary were recorded in commercial accommodation in the Balaton region, reports Világgazdaság. An increasing number of domestic and foreign guests are visiting the area around Hungary’s largest lake, thus the Balaton region continues to play a prominent role in Hungarian tourism. This trend was also experienced by Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Lake Balaton, with visitors from neighboring countries and Israel making up the majority of the guest base, in addition to domestic guests.
The number of nights spent in commercial accommodation on Lake Balaton increased by almost three percent in the summer of 2024, compared to the previous year, according to recent data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH).
Both domestic and foreign guest nights in the area increased compared to the third quarter of last year.
Nearly 30 percent of the total number of nights spent in commercial accommodation in Hungary were recorded on Lake Balaton – more than two-thirds of which were by Hungarians and one-third by foreigners.
At the Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Lake Balaton, over 40 percent of bookings were made by domestic guests. Guests from nearby countries such as Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Romania, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, and Poland accounted for more than 20 percent. There was also significant demand from more distant markets, particularly from Israel, where a quarter of guests came from.
The average summer stay was five nights this year, compared with an average of three days in the low season.
Peter Knoll, General Manager of Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Lake Balaton, is optimistic for the rest of 2024: “October and the second half of December promise to be very busy, and we are pleased to see that our bookings for November this year will exceed the same period last year.”
