Last week, the Chiefs of Staff of the Visegrád Group (V4), including General Gábor Böröndi, Chief of the Hungarian General Staff of the Armed Forces, held a two-day meeting in Gdynia, Poland. The meeting reviewed the security challenges of Central and Eastern Europe and issues of joint cooperation, Honvedelem.hu reports.

The meeting also addressed the logistical challenges faced by the armed forces in the framework of NATO-EU cooperation. Since July, Poland has held the rotating presidency of the V4, thus the objectives of the Polish presidency and military development plans were discussed as well.

For Hungary, the V4 remains a priority forum for cooperation, especially in view of the changed regional security situation and the need for regional coordination of defense tasks, the portal writes. Deepening cooperation with the V4 countries is a high priority for the Hungarian side during the six months of the EU Council Presidency, with a strong focus on security issues in the region, in particular the experience of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Hungary, due to its geographical location, plays a prominent role in terms of reinforcements and troop movements from both the West and the South, and supports both EU and NATO initiatives to ensure rapid troop movements.

Following the talks, the Chiefs of Staff visited an military exercise in the waters of Gdansk Bay involving the Naval Special Operations Unit of Poland, the Formoza, Czech, Slovak and Hungarian Special Forces and the Polish rescue vessel named Lech.

Last week’s meeting of the Chiefs of Staff in Poland will be followed by a summit of the European Union Military Committee in Budapest, where the Chiefs of General Staff of the EU and the Western Balkans will meet, starting today. This will be the first time that the committee of the EU Chiefs of Defense Staff will meet formally outside Brussels.
