Traffic between Belgrade and Subotica (Szabadka) on the entire Serbian section of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line will start on November 24, a year ahead of schedule, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on Thursday in Subotica, where he arrived on a test train from Novi Sad (Újvidék).

The Serbian President noted that it will take 70 minutes to get from Belgrade to Subotica, 184 kilometers away, and that once the railway line is fully completed, the journey time between the Serbian and Hungarian capitals will not exceed 2 hours and 40 minutes. He pointed out that without the support of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (VMSZ), the reconstruction of the railway line between Subotica and Belgrade could not have been completed so quickly and efficiently.

“My friendship with István Pásztor has built this country” and relations between Serbia and Hungary over the past 12 years, he said.

He was a bridge between us. My respect for Bálint Pásztor will build our relations in the future,”

the Serbian President said, referring to the late president of the VMSZ, the largest Hungarian party in the south of Serbia, who died almost a year ago, and the current president of the party.

Aleksandar Vučić also noted that the renovated building of the railway station in Subotica, which was scheduled to be inaugurated in five to six days, could not be opened yet, as the information on the signs at the station is only in Serbian and English, which is unacceptable in Subotica, where many Hungarians live and the Hungarian language is in official use.

The President has ordered the competent minister that the station building can only be opened if the information boards are also in Hungarian.

According to him, after years of hatred and hostility, the Serbian and Hungarian peoples have managed to build a sincere friendship, and such an omission is unacceptable.

The testing of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line between Subotica and Novi Sad started on September 23 and will continue until October 10.

The test train checks the condition of the railway tracks and the maximum speed that can be reached, which can exceed 200 kilometers per hour. The section of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line in Serbia, between Novi Sad and Belgrade, has been in operation since March 2022, with a journey time of 36 minutes.
