Hungarian runner, Szilvia Lubics won the Grand to Grand Ultra running race. The runners had to cover 275 kilometers between Arizona and Utah through “desolate, rocky, desert” landscapes, reports 24.hu.

According to the athlete’s Facebook page: “at night, she slept waist down in a sleeping bag in a tent, and during the day she ran in the blazing sun, mostly 40-50 kilometers, once 85 km and finally 13 km.”

Szilvia Lubics, who had previously won an ultramarathon in Antarctica, had one of the heaviest backpacks, weighing 10.5 kilograms even without water, according to a pre-race post. The runners had to bring the required clothing and food, among other things, with a minimum daily calorie requirement.

She took the lead on the second day of the race and led from then on. The Hungarian athlete won with a time of 45 hours 32 minutes, more than an hour faster than runner-up Alix Noblat.

The men’s field also included a Hungarian competitor, Miklós Roskovics, who finished sixth.

Fact

275 km in 6 stages, in 7 days, through the deserts of Utah and Arizona. The Grand to Grand Ultra is the first self-supported stage race ever organized in America. It is the only stage race that starts at one of the seven natural wonders of the world, the stunning northern rim of the Grand Canyon, and finishes at the Pink Cliffs, the top layer of the Grand Staircase, one of the world’s most iconic geological formations. The trail leads through high desert landscapes dotted with sand dunes, red rock canyons, buttes, mesas and hoodoos.

The Grand to Grand Ultra cut off times and stage distances are as follows:

  • Day 1: 13 hours on Stage 1 (30.8 miles/49.6 km)
  • Day 2: 12 hours on Stages 2 (26.9 miles/43.3 km)
  • Days 3 and 4: 34 hours on Stage 3 (The Long Stage, 53.2 miles/85.4 km)
  • Day 5: 12 hours on Stages 4 (26.0 miles/41.9 km)
  • Day 6: 12 hours on Stages 5 (26.3 miles/42.2 km)
  • Day 7: 2-4 hours, depending on staggered start times on Stage 6 (7.9 miles/12.7 km)
