First Hungarian Ship to Circumnavigate the Globe Back on Water

On Wednesday, the legendary sailing ship of Nándor Fa and József Gál, Szent Jupát, the first Hungarian ship to circumnavigate the Earth in 1985, was put back into the water, reports Magyar Nemzet.
The ship, named after the patron saint of canoeists, remained on Lake Balaton for a short time after its return home, and in 1996 the Foundation for its preservation donated it to The Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport.
The boat will now be exhibited at the Mathias Corvinus Collegium center in Révfülöp (northern shore of Lake Balaton), where it will undergo a full restoration and conservation by spring 2025, and will be made available to MCC students.
“The events of almost 40 years ago have had a profound impact on my whole life. It is a great pleasure to be able to relive a kind of renaissance of those experiences after all these years and to pass them on to younger generations,” emphasized sailor Nándor Fa.
József Gál noted that before the fall of communism in 1989, he and Nándor Fa had built a great dream, which they succeeded in realizing, opening the doors to offshore sailing and many others followed their example. “It is very important that four decades after the first launching, this ship can be in the hands of young people, and the spirit and strength it conveys can be passed on,” he underlined.
“The Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport considers it its most important mission to preserve and restore iconic Hungarian craft – and, if possible, to present them to the public in their own environment. (…) A key part of this mission is the presentation of the Szent Jupát ship, after almost a decade, in a more authentic setting than ever before,” highlighted Domonkos Schneller, Director General of the institution.

On September 26, 1985, Nándor Fa and József Gál set sail from Opatija, Croatia, on their boat Szent Jupát. The sailing trip took almost two years.
