Hungary and Romania have signed a transport agreement under which they will start preparations for the construction of a railway line between Szeged (southern Hungary) and Timisoara (Temesvár, western Romania), Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced in Bucharest on Wednesday.

After talks with Romanian Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Sorin Grindeanu, the Hungarian politician said that an agreement had been signed under which the two governments would start preparations for the construction of a railway line linking Szeged with Timisoara in order to be able to apply for European funds. The document also lays down the creation of a joint working group and the early preparation of a feasibility study. “A rail link between Szeged and Timisoara is clearly in the interest of both countries, both economically and nationally,” Mr. Szijjártó said.

An agreement was also reached to build a new border crossing point between Hungary and Romania at Kübekháza by 2027.

The Foreign Minister announced that the two governments had prepared and already submitted a tender to the European Union for the reconstruction of the St. Gellért Bridge between Magyarcsanád and (Cenad) Nagycsanád. It had received a good evaluation, he said, thus the parties were looking forward to the announcement of the results in September.

The Hungarian-Romanian border cooperation will now be even denser, there will be more roads, hopefully a bridge and another rail link,”

the politician noted.

He added that economic and trade cooperation is extremely lively, and that the Hungarian community living in Transylvania and Szeklerland, as well as the Romanian community living in Hungary, are constantly travelling across the border, “therefore it is in both our national interests that Romania should become a member of the Schengen area as soon as possible.” In this context, he stressed that the Hungarian government is trying to take as many steps as possible during its EU Council presidency to ensure that border controls between the two countries are finally lifted, and that long queues are eliminated.
