The domestic green fleet grew at the third highest rate in Europe in June and the first half of the year, the Ministry of Energy wrote on its Facebook page.

As has been the case steadily since February, the growth of Hungary’s pure electric vehicle fleet was among the continent’s best in June. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), 123.8 percent more clean passenger cars were registered in Hungary in June 2024 compared to a year earlier.

This is the third highest increase after Croatia’s 161.4 percent and the Czech Republic’s 140.8 percent, and much better than the EU average of a 1 percent decrease,

the ministry said.

The January-June figures also put Hungary’s growth in the “bronze medal” position, with the 59.5 percent figure for the country being beaten only by two Mediterranean island countries, Malta (129.9 percent) and Cyprus (61 percent). The European average still shows a positive growth of 1.3 percent in a six-month comparison, but it is still far below the performance of the top performers, the ministry noted.

“The future is green energy. Greening road transport, one of the biggest polluters, is an important goal not only for climate protection, cleaner air and livability in cities. The related industrial development can also make a major contribution to relaunching economic growth and strengthening European competitiveness,” the post stressed.

The ministry added that the domestic fleet of pure electric vehicles is growing at an all-time high, according to national statistics.

Based on data from the Ministry of Interior, more e-cars have been registered in Hungary every month since February than ever before,

they wrote.

The spectacular recovery in demand is being helped substantially by corporate e-car support. So far, companies have applied for more than half of the HUF 30 billion (EUR 78 million / 1 EUR=390 HUF) available. Depending on the battery capacity, the scheme provides a state contribution of HUF 2.8-4 million for the purchase of a pure electric car, van or minibus. A call for proposals is also being prepared to promote the rural electric charging network, with the HUF 28 billion budget to create around 100 new e-charging stations outside the capital.
