The European Commission has recently published the list of investments supported by the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility). Among these supported investments is the Budapest South Railway Ring, Magyar Nemzet spotted the Minister of Construction and Transport’s post on social media.

“The development of railways requires not only experts with political ambitions, but also knowledge – and money,” János Lázár wrote on Facebook. “In addition to minor improvements, we have won EUR 290 million in EU funding for the modernization of the Budapest-Kelenföld-Ferencváros railway line,” the Minister announced.

With the second phase of the South Railway Ring development, we will not only improve transport in Budapest and the agglomeration, but also the network of railway lines connecting the countries and cities of the continent,”

he stressed. He added that “we are improving public transport throughout the region.”

The CEF has so far provided a total of EUR 562.55 million in three rounds, including the projects just announced, which means that Hungary will not lose a single cent of cohesion funding, the Minister wrote.

Fact

As an integral part of the South Railway Ring project, the renewal of the railway line between the capital’s two districts, Ferencváros and Kelenföld stations is underway since January. The project also includes the construction of a new Danube bridge and the addition of three new stations: Nádorkert, Közvágóhíd, and Népliget.

The development of the South Railway Ring aims at making it the most sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of public transport in Budapest, offering a competitive alternative to road transport for suburban, local, national and international traffic. This requires an expansion of existing capacity. The investment is expected to improve transport connections, increase the throughput capacity of the line, reduce noise pollution and replace illegal and dangerous crossings with new safe crossing points.
