The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ) has been actively involved in initiatives to assist young people and families during its tenure. Party leader Hunor Kelemen emphasized the need for continued support to address the emigration of young people, stating that “long-term, courageous support” is essential.

At a project presentation in Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy, Romania) on Tuesday, Mr. Kelemen outlined plans for a housing estate for young doctors and teachers, as well as a dual vocational training campus for vocational secondary schools and universities.

Hunor Kelemen recalled previous proposals made by the RMDSZ to support young people, which were postponed due to various challenges.

He stressed the importance of bold projects in areas such as taxation and housing to provide meaningful assistance to young people.

He warned that without sustained support, the trend of youth emigration could continue, resulting in demographic challenges.

Mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe, Árpád Antal highlighted ongoing projects in the city, including a residential complex and vocational training campus funded by the EU. These projects, in partnership with the Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), aim to provide opportunities for vocational training and affordable housing.

Hunor Kelemen emphasized the collaborative effort between the RMDSZ government and local authorities in driving these initiatives forward.

He highlighted similar projects in Miercurea Ciuc (Csíkszereda) and stressed their importance for the community’s future.

Sándor Tamás, president of the county council, emphasized the strategic partnership between county and city governments, highlighting its positive impact on development.

Meanwhile, RMDSZ drew attention to the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) regarding anti-Hungarian sentiment perpetuated by Romanian extreme nationalist parties. Gábor Hajdu, an RMDSZ MP, emphasized the need to address this issue in international forums. He warned against the rise of extremist parties, threathening the rights of the Hungarian community.

Members of the OSCE human rights body will be in Romania to observe the pre-election campaign period, underscoring the importance of safeguarding minority rights in the political landscape.
