A Turkish official has accused the Republic of Cyprus of misrepresenting the truth and implementing a policy of isolation towards Turkish Cypriots to the UN, it emerged on Friday.
In his letter, Mehmet Dana, the self-proclaimed ‘representative of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus [TRNC] to the UN’ attacked statements by Cyprus UN ambassador Maria Michael and Greek permanent UN ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, saying they were distorting the truth and creating a negative climate between the Greek- and Turkish Cypriot peoples.
The letter was handed to the UN by Turkey’s deputy permanent representative.
In it, Dana claimed the Republic was implementing “isolation policies against Turkish Cypriots, [and] limiting their representation, travel and economic opportunities.”
He said Turkish Cypriots were making efforts to address issues such as property disputes, missing persons, and the preservation of cultural heritage, claiming that the Greek Cypriots were neglecting their corresponding counter-duties.
The Turkish Cypriot side “defends its actions in […] Varosha,” Dana said, as “legitimate and beneficial for both communities.”
Elsewhere he referred to the commitment of the “TRNC to negotiations based on sovereign equality” and called for abandoning “failed frameworks of the past”.
He called on Greek Cypriots to “focus” on building trust and cooperation to promote reconciliation.
“Our state is ready to engage in formal negotiations for the establishment of a structured [cooperation] with the Greek Cypriot side [after] recognition of […] sovereign equality and equal international status. Misleading remarks of the Greek and Greek Cypriot representatives are not confirmed by legal and historical facts,” Dana added.
“Instead of making baseless accusations that [create] an environment of mistrust and hostility […] the Greek Cypriot side should make more efforts to create an atmosphere conducive to cooperation […],” the letter concluded.
