Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of 62-year-old Vitaly Shostak in his apartment in Limassol are continuing on Sunday, the police said.
Shostak died after being stabbed once in the chest with a kitchen knife on Friday night, and his 63-year-old wife remains in custody after having been arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning on suspicion of premeditated murder.
She reportedly denies having committed the crime and claims her husband inserted the knife into his own chest.
On Sunday, the police said they were taking statements from the couple’s family and friends, as well as examining evidence and documents from inside the apartment.
Additionally, they said the couple’s son, who lives in the United Kingdom, arrived in Cyprus on Saturday evening, and that his testimony would be considered “important” to solving the case.
News website Cyprus Times reported that when arrested on suspicion of murder, the woman told the police “I didn’t do anything like that”, while a police representative told the Limassol district court at the woman’s remand hearing that she denies all charges.
The woman had reportedly told the police that as it was her birthday on Friday, they were opening gifts sent by their son.
Then, she said, at some point, her husband went to the kitchen and returned to the living room with the knife lodged in his chest. She said he then collapsed, and she removed the knife, placed it next to him, and called the police.
Cyprus Times reported that she had called the emergency services “in a state of shock” and had told them “my husband kill me [sic], help me, help me, help me”.
Newspaper Phileleftheros reported that the woman had said that when Shostak returned to the living room, his shirt was covered in blood and he was breathing heavily.
She did, however, admit that there had been an argument between them shortly before he died, and that they had both been drinking alcohol.
News website Alpha News reported that the woman had become upset and called their son to tell him “not to send them so many sweets”, and that this was the root cause of the argument between the pair.
It was also heard in court that investigators had obtained testimony stating that “voices were heard” from inside the apartment and that a person who went to see what was going on “saw the victim covered in blood and breathing heavily”.
