A 41-year-old Greek Cypriot man was shot at the Ayia Fyla area in Limassol on Monday night, which police are investigating as an attempted murder.
The shooter fled with the vehicle that the 41-year-old had arrived in with two other friends.
The motive behind the attack appears to be financial differences over illegal activities, Limassol CID chief Lefteris Kyriacou said at the scene.
Police were notified of the shooting at around 7pm and preliminary investigations so far suggest that the victim, along with another two men aged 31 and 28 had arranged a meeting at the suspect’s home in Ayia Fyla.
The meeting has been described as one ‘among friends’ aimed at resolving differences.
Nonetheless, when the suspect came to realise the arrival of the three, he opened the door and fired three shots.
The 41-year-old was injured after a bullet to his leg and was taken to a nearby hospital. He was undergoing surgery, Kyriacou said.
Police have since launched a manhunt to track down the suspect, who fled the scene with his vehicle. An arrest warrant has been issued against him.
Commenting on the fact that the incident took place in a busy and densely populated area, Kyriacou said “it is worrying, but the police are in the area carrying out checks and taking appropriate action.”
