Police on Thursday arrested and charged a 32-year-old driver for going more than twice over the speed limit on the Ayia Napa-Larnaca highway.

The man clocked 218 km/hour while driving on the highway near Aradippou. The speed limit on highways is 100km/hour.

The incident happened just before noon. Police flagged down the driver and arrested him on the spot.

The man was taken to Aradippou police station, questioned and charged. He was later released, to appear in court on Friday.

In a statement, the police said speeding is a major cause of serious traffic accidents.
