Police in Limassol intervened on Monday night to prevent a suspected robbery when two masked people were spotted in a vehicle outside a kiosk in Polemidia. A 14-year-old was arrested following a chase, while a 17-year-old is being sought.
Limassol CID said two plainclothes officers in an unmarked police vehicle noticed a parked car outside the kiosk. The driver and passenger were wearing hooded sweatshirts and had their faces covered with surgical masks.
The officers turned on their flashing lights, parked next to the suspicious car and identified themselves as police. They informed the individuals that a search would be conducted.
However, the driver of the vehicle sped off, reportedly driving dangerously and running a red light in an attempt to evade them.
Police officers from Limassol’s rapid response unit pursued the vehicle until it crashed into metal poles and came to a halt.
Both occupants exited the car and fled on foot. Police managed to apprehend one of them, who was later identified as a 14-year-old from Paphos. He was handed over to his sister and told to report to Limassol CID on Tuesday.
A court warrant has been issued for a 17-year-old believed to be the driver of the vehicle, who remains at large.
