Police officers on Friday discovered an improvised package containing a mobile phone and a small quantity of drugs during routine checks conducted at the Nicosia central prison on people seeking entry.

According to a statement released by the prison department, the contraband was found during a thorough inspection of a visitor. The drug enforcement agency has been notified and is now handling the investigation.

The statement stressed that the introduction or attempted introduction of any prohibited items or substances into the facility constitutes a criminal offense, punishable by up to one year in prison.
