The education ministry on Monday confirmed it was investigating allegations of a Nicosia high school mistreating an ADHD student, after a parent reported the principal.

According to Philenews and Reporter which broke the story, the incident came to light after a father reported alleged mistreatment from the high school against his son.

He claimed a psychologist had advised his son to keep a notebook where he would document these issues so he could have them on record.

But a teacher grabbed the notebook off him, handed it to the principal and refused to give it back, according to the father.

He took the matter up to the principal directly who insisted she would not return it, prompting the father to escalate it up to the education ministry.

Sources at the education ministry confirmed to the Cyprus Mail they had received the complaint and an investigation was underway.

According to the reports, issues at the school had been ongoing since last year.

His father sought to have his son transferred to a different school, it was rejected but after he appealed it, the child has since gone to another high school.

Head of the ADHD association Marina Georgiou said it this was not the first incident that had affected the school related to poor understanding of ADHD.

She underlined that teachers need to be better aware of the needs that students with ADHD have, something the education ministry recognised and said it would be open to give more training.
