Belgian rail and Brussels public transport network Stib are among services facing disruption on 13 January due to a national strike.

Railway workers' unions have filed a strike notice that runs from 12 January at 22.00 to 13 January at 22.00, reports RTBF.

The notice is valid for SNCB, Infrabel and HR Rail personnel to enable union members to participate in a joint day of action about pensions. A protest is planned in front of Brussels’ "pension tower" located next to Midi station.

Unions aim to "denounce the decisions of the Arizona government which wants to make three billion euro savings on pensions," said the CGSP. The socialist union, representing French speaking SNCB staff, is demanding higher pensions and shorter careers for its members due to the arduous nature of their work.

"SNCB and Infrabel are working on developing an adapted rail service based on non-striking staff members. The adapted transport plan will be communicated on Saturday and will also be available from Sunday on the SNCB online travel planner," confirmed the national rail network.

Stib services affected

Brussels’ public transport operator Stib also expects major disruptions on its network on 13 January.

It plans to maintain part of the metro, tram and bus service running and promises to keep passengers updated “in real time of the situation” via its website, mobile application and public display screens at stops and stations, as well as social media.

Stib Customer Care will be open from 6.00 on Monday to answer questions asked on social media and by telephone on 070 23 2000.

However, the network invites the public to plan alternative travel solutions in Brussels on the day.
