Global taxi app company Uber has introduced a new service in Brussels and Flanders where children between 13 and 18 can order a taxi independently.
"Whether your teenager is going to school, sports training or a party, this new tool offers a safe mobility solution for teenagers, while providing peace of mind and flexibility for parents," said Laurent Slits, managing director at Uber Belgium.
To use Uber Teens, parents must invite their child to create an account as part of the family profile. Only then can the teenager book a ride via the Uber application.
As the teenager’s profile is always linked to the parent’s account, parents will know exactly when their child books a ride and where the taxi is going. Parents can also track the journey at any time.
Additional safety measures are also available. For example, journeys for teenagers are destination-linked. This means that only the teenager can change the end point of the journey.
If, on the other hand, the journey deviates from the planned route, stops unexpectedly or ends prematurely, the teenager will receive an alert and a message in the app asking if everything is proceeding as it should.
Founded in San Francisco back in March 2009, Uber Technologies quickly became “the world’s most valuable startup,” according to Investopedia.
Since then, it has proved not only very profitable but also controversial, given its explosive growth and resulting damage to traditional taxi firms who say the company is unfairly taking away their business.
