A man has been charged with the triple murder of his 40-year old partner and her two children - aged 13 and one - whose bodies were found in a house in the Brussels neighbourhood of Ixelles on Saturday.
“The Brussels Capital/Ixelles police received a call from a concerned family member who had been out of contact with a relative for some time,” said a spokeswoman for the Brussels public prosecutor's office.
“The police went to the scene and on arrival found a man inside the residence. After significant urging by the officers, the suspect decided to open the door for them. The woman and the youngest child appear to have died as a result of gunshot wounds. The cause of death of the third victim is currently under investigation.”
The 54-year-old man, who worked as an estate agent, is in police custody and has been charged with murder.
“At the moment, the exact circumstances are still unclear,” the police spokeswoman added.
“The investigation is ongoing and in its interest and out of respect for the family, no further details can be released for now.”
Just before the suspected murders, the man declared on social media that he had "the best three years of his life" with his partner.
The message read: "The three best years of my life, thank you to my beautiful wife who gave me an amazing daughter."
