The European Parliament showed its support for the launch of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month by illuminating Station Europe in pink on 1 October.

Marking the start of Pink October, the symbolic act shined a light on the importance of breast cancer prevention, early detection and support for those affected by the disease.

Throughout the month, various actions will raise awareness and funds for breast cancer, which is diagnosed in 500,000 women in Europe every year. Initiatives includes the 10th edition of the Pink Walk in every Belgian province and Pink@Work day on 25 October.

Part of a global movement, the illumination of the Europe station in Place Luxembourg was organised by Pink Ribbon Belgium and attended by European Parliament officials.

“We can beat cancer and ours is the generation to do it", said European Parliament president Roberta Metsola (pictured above left with Pink Ribbon spokesperson Bettina Geysen).

"I am proud that the European Parliament is marking the Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we reaffirm our commitment to combat breast cancer. By raising awareness, promoting prevention and supporting research, we give hope to patients and their loved ones,” she added.

Dr Jan Lamote of Pink Ribbon Belgium underlined the importance of the Pink October campaign. "Breast cancer is still the most common cancer in Belgian women. A healthy lifestyle and early detection remain very decisive for the avoidance of the disease and the course of treatment when one is affected."

Previous editions of the awareness month have seen different landmarks given the pink glow treatment thanks to support from Estée Lauder Companies. They include the Brussels Atomium, the town halls of Brussels, Antwerp, Lier and Bruges, as well as the mine shafts of Maasmechelen.

Pink Ribbon organises fundraising campaigns for specific initiatives in collaboration with the King Baudouin Foundation.
