Conor McGregor Instagram blunder as he shares photos with famous trophy

Conor McGregor congratulated his cousin on winning the FAI Cup with DUNDALK as he posed for a photo with the famous trophy.

Warren Davis was part of the Drogheda United squad that won the cup back in November, beating Derry City 2-0 in the final at the Aviva Stadium.

Writing on Instagram, McGregor congratulated Davis on winning the trophy, wrongly saying that he played for Drogheda's Louth rivals Dundalk twice in the post. The Lilywhites had little to celebrate last season after being relegated to the League of Ireland First Division as they faced financial issues off the pitch.

The former two-weight UFC champion wrote: "Yup the gaf, @theblackforgeinn! FAI cup in the house! Congrats my cuz @warrend02 on winning the fai trophy with @dundalkfc! That’s two of my cousins now who have won this prestigious Irish Football League trophy. One with Bohs, Keith, and one with Dundalk, Warren!! Tremendous! It’s in the blood!"

Fans were quick to point out the blunder, with one writing: "Wrong club." Another commented: "I think Warren plays with Drogheda."

Someone else wrote: "He plays for Drogheda."

McGregor quickly realised the mistake and edited the post to say Drogheda rather than Dundalk.

Goals from Andrew Quinn and Douglas James-Taylor secured a first major trophy for Drogheda since they won the League of Ireland in 2007 as they lifted the Cup for just the second time in their history.

The match was attended by 38,723 people, which was a new record for a final involving two clubs from outside Dublin. The victory also secured European football for Drogheda this summer.
