Fundraiser launched to help Kerry families after homes devastated by Storm Bert

A fundraiser has been launched to help families in Kerry whose homes were destroyed by flooding from Storm Bert.

A multi-million euro clean-up operation got underway this week in the west of the country after the second named storm of the season caused intense gales, heavy rainfall and severe flooding.

The violent weather system tore through the country over the weekend, causing considerable damage to parts of Galway, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Donegal.

Over 60,000 homes and businesses were left without power overnight on Friday as the storm raged, with more than 100 roads around the country left impassable on Saturday.

A number of families in Kerry had their homes devastated by the flooding, leaving them without their house following the storm. A GoFundMe has been set up to help support the families in their time of need.

"16 homes were devastated by flooding in Killocrim and Gortnaminsha last Saturday. It has left families with nothing," a post on the GoFundMe appeal read.

"After speaking with some of the home owners they have.given me permission to set up this.

"These families have lost everything, and won’t be in their homes for months. More importantly, most houses will not be covered by house insurance. These families are totally lost.

"Christmas is only a few weeks, please help ease the stress for these families.

"Can you help them any donation will be greatly appreciated please please give what you can. For everything you have done already thank you."

So far the GoFundMe has raised €16,341 out of the €30,000 target for those impacted by the flood. To donate to the flood relief for Killacrim and Gortnaminsha families, head here.
