Miranda Hart reflects on 'dark days' ahead of emotional book release

Miranda Hart says she’s “found a way out of the dark” as she has opens up about the chronic illness that left her floored for 10 years.

The 51-year-old actress hopes that by telling the story of her health struggles in her upcoming memoir it will help others going through tough times. Going public with her secret illness in August, fans were delighted to see her back and on the road to recovery.

Miranda will reveal all about the debilitating illness in her new book I Haven’t Been Entirely Honest With You, out on Thursday. Teasing what fans can expect, she told: “It centres on the passion – the inner fire – I’ve stoked over 10 very challenging years, shining a light on chronic illness and those who live with it as I have.

“I’m blessed to have found a path to recovery, a path that was incredibly hard won and a fire tended to day in and day out as I navigated both the medical and holistic health worlds, as well as my own inner landscape, to find a way out of the dark.”

Miranda found fame with her self-titled BBC sitcom in 2009 and went on to star in Call the Midwife from 2012 until 2015 - but she did not return for the sixth series of the BBC drama following reports she was unwell. Hoping the book will help others touched by a similar experience, Miranda reassured fans that she is doing great now.

Writing in her column for Good Housekeeping magazine, she continued: “I hope, my lovely reader chum, that if you’re living with chronic illness, or you know someone who is (though I think the treasures I found in darkness apply to most of us), you’ll come and sit a while by this fire of mine and take some of its warmth and comfort into whatever the winter months bring.

“My book is the story of a woman reaching midlife and coming to terms with an undiagnosed health condition. Though fear not, it’s a story of hope and redemption as well as something of a practical and philosophical guide for recovery from difficult conditions and situations. Spoiler alert: the woman gets well, and the woman is… me! Yes, it’s a memoir of sorts.”

Miranda previously told how her illness caused her to gain weight but said she had accepted her new body shape. She also joked she had “lost all of the midlife weight that was lumped on”, then whispered: “I haven’t.”

But the TV star added: “I’m quite proud I’ve dismantled quite a lot of shame about my weight gain. Life happens. Illness happens. It’s a great way to keep focusing on the greatest healer - self-compassion. If I lose it or not, I know I am loved. Peace out.”
