Drogheda United raid Swedish club for new defender

Kevin Doherty is confident that James Bolger can play an important part in Drogheda United’s battle to beat the drop.

The big defender has joined the basement side from Swedish club Bodens BK, having played in America before that.

Bolger was on Doherty’s radar for some time as he played on the same Bodens team as new Drogs team-mate Zishim Bawa, who signed for the Louth club in February.

Drogheda boss Doherty said: “I was really impressed by the games I saw him play in and since he’s come into training, he’s been brilliant.

“He hasn’t been able to play for us, but we’ve had a few practice games in training that he’s been part of.

“He’s big, strong, quick, very good in the air and on the ball. We’ve been really impressed with him over the last few weeks.

“He’s settled into the group well and I’m delighted to have him signed now.”

Bolger is a former Galway United academy player and spent four seasons with Northwestern University in America.

He then transferred to Longwood University and played in NCAA Division 1 before securing a move to Sweden in April where he played 13 times in the second tier.

Bolger, 23, is Drogheda’s fifth new signing this summer following the arrival of Douglas James-Taylor, Elicha Ahui, Shane Farrell and Luke Dennison.
