Viewers praise brutally 'honest' interview with Patrick Kielty and Craig Revel Horwood

Viewers have praised the “honest” interview between Craig Revel Horwood and Patrick Kielty on Friday night’s Late Late Show.

The Australian-British dancer and actor appeared as the third guest on RTÉ’s flagship talk show, coming on after Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll and Michaela Morley.

Opening up the chat, Patrick revealed that the pair actually go way back and have worked together before, meeting on a show in the early 2000s called Fame Academy.

Patrick said: "Not a lot of people know this, but we go back a long way. 20 odd years ago we were on Fame Academy. This was before you took a nasty turn, you were a nice judge."

"The funny thing is, that's true," Craig replied. "And I never thought you'd amount to anything! It's amazing, it's fabulous."

The audience and the host laughed off the cheeky quip with his guest before the interview turned a bit more serious, as Craig opened up to Kielty about growing up with an alcoholic father.

"It got to the point where he tried to shoot my mum," said Craig. "It was a disaster, you can imagine.

"Having to live with it, even as a child, or a mother, or a grandparent, is just horrible. I didn't want to talk about it... I was very uncomfortable with the whole thing."

He added: "He ended up a very lonely, old many really, in the middle of the Australian outback, on a trout farm. He divorced himself from society entirely."

Following his father’s death, Craig explained that he had been expecting it on some level.

"It was a shock, even though I was probably expecting it," he said. "I know there's a lot of people out there who have gone through it and are still living with it. But you can overcome it, is what I'm saying."

Viewers flocked to social media to open up about the “honest” interview between the pair.

"Wow! I had no idea of Craig Horwood’s background. So tough but my God, what a brilliant success story he is," one viewer wrote.

Another penned: "Janey mac. What a story."

"An unexpectedly honest conversation from Craig Horwood about the effects of alcoholism on families tonight on the Late Late - a very brave discussion. Was also unaware he’s Australia!" a third agreed.

One more wrote: "Really liked the Craig Horwood interview. Didn’t know he had such a traumatic childhood. He deserves all his success for overcoming the trauma."
