Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction overturned by New York appeals court

The New York appeals court has overturned Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction, ordering a new trial in the landmark #MeToo case.

The ruling found that the judge at the landmark #MeToo trial prejudiced the ex-movie mogul with improper rulings, including a decision to let women testify about allegations that were not part of the case.

The latest ruling by the Court of Appeals will now reopen a tough chapter in America's reckoning with sexual misconduct by powerful figures, which goes back to 2017, when there were a flood of allegations against Weinstein.

The court has ordered a new trial and it could mean that his accusers may need to relive their traumas on the witness stand.

Weinstein, 72, has been in prison since he was convicted and ordered to serve a 23-year sentence in New York. He was charged with forcibly performing oral sex on a TV and film production assistant in 2006 and rape in the third degree for an attack on an aspiring actress in 2013.

He will remain imprisoned because he was convicted in Los Angeles in 2022 of another rape and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
