Four Irish athletes including Kellie Harrington secure bronze medals at European Championship

Kellie Harrington was one of four Irish boxers to secure at least a bronze medal with victory at the European Championships in Serbia on Tuesday.

Harrington, Shannon Sweeney, Niamh Fay and Aoife O'Rourke were all victorious in their quarter-finals and are guaranteed to return to Ireland with bronze.

Two-time European Champion Harrington was made to work hard by Gizem Ozer, but the reigning Olympic Champion showed her class to edge a narrow split-decision win to stretch her undefeated streak to 31 fights.

Fay was handed a walkover after her opponent withdrew from injury and will fight for silver in the 54kg division later this week, while Sweeney recorded the shock of the day when she beat top seed and 2022 World Championship medalist Laura Fuertes of Spain in the 50kg division.

O'Rourke beat Hungary's Veronika Nakota by unanimous decision to march into the semi-finals of the 75kg division, while her sister Lisa was beaten by Jessica Triebelova of Slovakia on a split decision.
