The Slovak Ministry of Transport and Construction plans to restart several Slovak-Hungarian regional rail connections, they announced on Wednesday.
The first rail connections to be reopened will be between Lučenec (Losonc) and Hatvan and between Košice (Kassa) and Hidasnémeti. In the second phase, four other interstate regional rail links could be revived, depending on negotiations with Hungarian railway company MÁV-Start, they said.
According to the ministry, the Lučenec – Fiľakovo (Fülek) – Salgótarján – Hatvan line could connect to the Zvolen (Zólyom), Rimavská Sobota (Rimaszombat), and Rožňava (Rozsnyó) lines in Slovakia and to the Košice – Budapest EuroCity (EC) in Hatvan, Hungary. It is planned that trains would run every hour during peak hours and every two hours off-peak. On the Košice – Čaňa (Hernádcsány) – Hidasnémeti line, trains are also expected to run at one-hour intervals during peak hours.

said Slovak Transport Minister Jozef Ráž, pointing out that the former rail connections were closed in 2003, but would be in great demand. According to the Slovak ministry, representatives of the Slovak state railways (ŽSR) and MÁV will hold talks on the issue as early as Thursday.
The ministry said that there was also a possibility of reopening further rail connections on the two lines linking Komárno, the Lučenec-Ipolytarnóc – Szécsény – Balassagyarmat line, the Slovenské Nové Mesto (Szlovákújhely) – Sátoraljaújhely line, and the Šahy (Ipolyság) – Drégelypalánk – Balassagyarmat line.
