The Hungarian men’s relay team won the bronze medal at the Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Dresden, Germany on Sunday.

The relay team of Balázs Bontovics, Márk Csizmadia, Péter Jászapáti, and Dániel Tiborcz held second and third positions in the first half of the 5000m final, until a bad exchange with 25 laps to go dropped them back to fourth. With ten laps to go, the Americans got ahead of the Hungarians, but fell shortly afterwards, leaving the Hungarian team in fourth place. After the race, the jury disqualified the Polish quartet for a foul exchange that caused the Americans to fall, and

the Hungarian team took their first World Cup medal of the season.

In first place, the South Koreans finished ahead of the Japanese.

The women’s relay team of Sára Luca Bácskai, Zsófia Kónya, Barbara Somogyi, and Rebeka Sziliczei-Német reached the semi-finals, finishing third behind Italy and China to finish seventh overall. The victory went to the Dutch.

Two Hungarians competed in the individual races, Balázs Bontovics in the 1000m and Olympic bronze medalist Zsófia Kónya in the 500m, both of whom were eliminated in the quarter-finals, the former ending up in 19th and the latter in 14th place.

The World Cup season concludes next weekend in Gdansk, Poland, with the final event of the whole season being the World Championships in Rotterdam in March.
