Bratislava with better public transport than Paris, Lisbon
However, still pales in comparison with neighbouring countries.
Seven out of 10 residents are generally satisfied with the public transport in their city. However, there is a huge satisfaction as the number varies from 22 percent in Palermo, Italy to 95 percent in Zurich, Switzerland, reports Euronews.
When it comes to Bratislava, 71 percent of people are happy with the service, more than Paris in France with 67 percent and Lisbon in Portugal with 62 percent.
The data comes from the European Commission's 2023 Report on the quality of life in European cities. The report compares several factors, including affordability, security, frequency and reliability.
According to the report, compared to 2019, the share of satisfied residents increased the most in the Slovak capital by 7 percentage points.
Still, Bratislava's figure pales in comparison with cities in neighbouring countries. While 74 percent are satisfied with the public transport in Hungary, the difference is even bigger when it comes to Warsaw in Poland, Prague in Czechia, and Vienna in Austria, with 85, 88 and 91 percent, respectively. Vienna ranks the highest among capital cities.
Among other top ranked cities are Helsinki (89 percent) in Finland and Stockholm (88 percent) in Sweden.
On the other hand, residents in cities in Italy and the Balkans reported greater dissatisfaction with their public transport service. When it comes to capital cities, only 29 percent of residents of Rome in Italy and Tirana in Albania are happy with it. In the case of the former, the main problem is safety - more than half of the population considers it unsafe, with further problems with access, frequency and reliability.
Still, Palermo ranked even worse, with only 22 percent satisfied with the state of their public transport.
