World War II ammunition found in several places in one day while mushroom picking
Advice on what to do when you come across an unusual object.
On Monday, September 30, three different people found three pieces of old World War II ammunition while mushroom picking.
One piece was found in the forest on the Devínska Kobyla mountain near Bratislava, approximately 300 metres away from Ulica Pavla Horova Street in the capital's borough of Devínska Nová Ves. According to a bomb disposal expert, it was a German Model 39 "Eihandgranate" (hand grenade). The expert secured the grenade and transported it safely for disposal.
The other two pieces were found in the Vranov nad Topľou district, eastern Slovakia.
The first was reported near the village of Cabov. A woman found a live 82 millimetre artillery shell. A bomb disposal expert destroyed the piece on the spot. The second - a 120 millimetre unexploded artillery shell - was found near the village of Davidov. An expert transported the ammunition away for for disposal.
Now that a mushroom picking season is starting, the police says that should people find what appears to be a piece of ammunition, they should not handle them in any way and immediately call the emergency number 158 (police).
According to the police, here's what to do in case you find an unusual object while mushroom picking.
You should leave it where you found it. Do not touch or attempt to place it elsewhere. A piece of ammunition can be unstable and inappropriate handling may cause an explosion. Do not attempt to use any tools to open, disassemble it. Keep children and pets in safe distance.
