Festivities you don't want to miss

After last weekend when several fairs and grape harvest festivities closed due to extreme weather, the forecast for this weekend seems much, much better. Taking place on the weekend of September 20-22 in the picturesque wine-growing town of Pezinok, the event draws visitors not only from the vicinity, but from abroad as well. In addition to a lot of concerts, you will see the celebration of grapes, learn about the harvest and the work of local winemakers and winegrowers, witness a historic procession, expositions, and more. You can also expect stands with delicacies. Don't miss it, more details here.

In addition to Pezinok, fairs and vinobranie events will be taking place in several towns all over Slovakia, for example, in Skalica, Martin, Považská Bystrica, Zvolen, Sobrance, Veľký Krtíš, and more.

MISCELLANEOUS FUN

Something from the past

Are you a collector of antiques, memorabilia or other things that sepia tone would be a good fit for? If so, don't miss the September antique market - the last one this year - that will take place on Saturday at the Červený Kameň castle near the village of Častá in Bratislava Region. You'll find antique furniture, jewellery, old books, pictures, coins and much more. Make sure to be there quick so you have something to choose from, though. The market takes place from 7:30 to 12:00. Learn more here.

Meet your fellow collectors

Somewhat related, on Sunday a country-wide meeting of collectors of coins, stamps, postcards, zero euro banknotes, and badges will take place in Banská Bystrica, central Slovakia. The event will be held between 08:00-12:00, click here for more information. If you cannot be there, the final meeting of this year will be on November 10.

Comic/game/anime heaven

For young people (and those young within), September is inextricably linked with the annual Comics Salón & Anime Show pop-culture festival. Taking place September 20-22 in Bratislava's Ružinov borough, the 37th edition of the event offers a rich programme for any geeky person, including workshops, lectures, movie screenings, karaoke, cosplay competition, panels with authors, board and video games and so much more.

For more information, click here. If you have never attended the festival but considered doing so, check out a personal account of The Slovak Spectator's Jeremy Hill who attended a related event in spring last year.

Dog show

This Saturday and Sunday, poodles, as well as their enthusiasts, breeders and owners from around Europe are going to descend upon the town of Nitra for the European Poodle Show 2024. If you belong to one such group, this is the place to be. Find out more here.

A celebration

This year, the Západoslovenské Múzeum museum in Trnava, western Slovakia, celebrates its 70th anniversary. On the occasion, the institution invites the general public for a special tour of the museum as well as a picnic with rich cultural programme on Saturday 10:00 to 18:00. The picnic will have plenty of refreshments from local food and drink producers, as well as craft coffee and beer. Find out more here.

SPORT

A french game

Pétanque is a sport whose origin goes back to the early 20th century in the south of France. It arrived in Slovakia in 1994 and ever since it has been growing. Although Bratislava can boast of the largest boulodrome (or courts) in the country, there are a number across the Slovakia. This Saturday, a tournament in pétanque will be held in the village of Hronskek near Banská Bytrica, central Slovakia, by Alliance Française Banská Bystrica. If you want to learn more about the game, the event is a perfect opportunity. Learn more here.

TRAVEL

Tips on hikes in the High Tatras

According to the weather forecast, this weekend is shaping up to be sunny and not hot, which makes for good conditions to go on a hike. If you're going to the High Tatras or are thinking about hiking, here are a few tips on where to go. If you're an inexperienced hiker or are looking for easy but still beautiful treks, you can visit one of the most beautiful Tatras waterfalls, or the Popradské Pleso mountain lake.

If you're feeling a little bit more adventurous, from the lake you can get to the Kôprovský Štít peak. Another beautiful hike that offers amazing vistas and has some technical parts is the trail to Východná Vysoká in the heart of the mountain range.
