Efforts to interconnect railway lines with city public transport to better utilise the existing rail infrastructure in Bratislava is bearing its first fruits. Trains running on the Bratislava-Dunajská Streda-Komárno line will be stopping at the new Bratislava – Vrakuňa railway stop as of Tuesday, July 2.

The stop, located near the Čiližská bus stop, is part of the integrated passenger transport terminal (TIOP) Vrakuňa. The non-railway section of the project still needs to be completed.

"I believe that this transfer point will serve not only people from this part of the boroughs of Vrakuňa and Podunajské Biskupice for a long time, but all those who travel either towards Bratislava or Dunajská Streda," said Štefan Sedláček from the railway operator company ŽSR on Monday as cited by the TASR newswire.

It is still necessary to complete access to the railway station including footpaths and a public transport stop. The contracted builder TSS Grade has been working on them in cooperation with the city.

“It’s only a small part of the construction, the main part is built,” said Daniel Adamovský, the company’s production director. He believes that if everything goes smoothly, the construction could be approved within two months.

The new railway stop is located in the immediate vicinity of the public transport turnaround point. There are two trolleybus lines connecting this part of Bratislava with the city centre (Rajská) and the main railway station. Bus line 65 connects Vrakuňa with other parts of eastern Bratislava. During peak hours, bus line 75 connects Vrakuňa with health and school facilities in Ružinov via Bajkalská Street towards Krasňany in Rača.

"It’s a really wide range of connections," said Milan Donoval, deputy chairman of the board belonging to the public transport operator DPB.

TIOP Vrakuňa is the first such terminal implemented by ŽSR in Bratislava. Its construction with a price tag of €3.9 million started at the end of October last year.

Several other integrated passenger transport projects are in the pipeline in Bratislava. Currently, the TIOP Lamačská brána (Bory) and the TIOP Ružinov project are being worked on. There are also plans for such terminals in Rača, Petržalka and Železná Studnička.
