The Professional Journalists’ Guild (UZPR) has unveiled on Friday a memorial plaque to mark 100 years of activity. The plaque is placed on the building that hosted one century ago the signing of the document setting up the first organisation of professional journalists, one year after the Great Union in 1918.

Dozens of journalists have attended on Friday the event on 4, Constantin Mille St., in front of a building which hosted years ago the former ‘Berlin’ beerhouse.

On the occasion of unveiling the memorial plaque, UZPR President Doru Dinu Glavan recalled that in May 1990 a group of journalists has reestablished the Professional Journalists’ Guild in Romania, several months after the end of the communist regime.

“What started in 1990 needs to continue, although other associations have been set up lately, which include a large number of journalists.

UZPR has made it all the way, despite the vicissitudes and problems, it is a strong guild which includes more than 2,700 members, with fresh applications every day. I believe that besides their number, the value of the journalists stand as basis for the value of the guild. After 100 years we are here to celebrate the signing of the document in this building, by unveiling a memorial plaque which we hope to last another century. I am glad that so many of us are here, after decades of working as journalists,” UZPR President Glavan said.

UZPR will also conduct other manifestations to mark the celebration of 100 years of professional journalism in Romania, with meetings, debates on the outlook of the current and future press, events to be hosted by over 35 UZPR branches in the country and in Diaspora. The culminant event will be the centennial celebration with an event to be hosted by the Romanian Athenaeum at mid-March.
