There was a total of 13 road or traffic-related deaths in 2024, slightly down from 14 in 2023, which was in turn down from 26 in 2022, which had been the deadliest recorded year for road fatalities in Malta.
Going over information published by the National Statistics Office, the NSO said that road traffic accidents and casualties during the first quarter of 2024 decreased by 0.3% and 8.2% respectively when compared to the same time period in 2023.
In the first three months of 2024, the highest number of road traffic accidents occurred on Thursdays, with 613 cases, making up 16.1% of the total cases during Q1 2024.
In terms of localities, Qormi registered the highest number of road traffic accidents during the first quarter of the year with 256 cases. The localities with the second and third most cases were Birkirkara with 225 and St Paul's Bay with 188.
The NSO reported that there were 3,811 total road traffic accidents in this time period, with the time from 12pm to 2.59pm having the most cases.
Looking at the NSO's findings on the second quarter of 2024 in regard to road traffic accidents, it stated that accidents increased by 4% and casualties decreased by 7.9% compared to the same quarter in 2023. The highest number of road traffic accidents during Q2 2024 occurred on Tuesdays, with the same three localities as the first quarter registering the highest number of cases, although Birkirkara had the most in this period with 294. The overall number of reported cases during this period was 4,436, which was an increase of 4% compared to Q2 2023.
For the third quarter of 2024, the NSO stated that road traffic accidents increased by 1% and casualties decreased by 9.1% compared to Q3 2023. It added that the highest number of cases during Q3 2024 occurred on Mondays, with Birkirkara once again registering the highest number of cases with 281. The total number of road traffic accidents during this period amounted to 4,395, which was 1% up from 2023.
In the government's Budget 2025 document, Finance Minister Clyde Caruana commented that the government is looking at a number of proposals which can be carried out in a short time with the aim of relieving traffic congestion, particularly concerning traffic in peak hours. Caruana also said that the priority in such work is to organise the country's roads better "and adapt to the modern economy of 24 hours every day".
The Finance Minister had also commented that the use of technology plays an important role in better traffic management, and so he said that the government intends to invest in the Intelligent Traffic Management System, which he stated will ultimately contribute to optimising the influx of traffic.

5 April: Man dies after losing control of vehicle and crashing in Swieqi
A 56-year-old man from Zebbug died after losing control of the Toyota Vitz he was driving and crashing into private residences in Swieqi. The incident took place at 3am in Swieqi Road, and the man died after being taken to hospital.
7 April: German man dies in Marsalforn Road motorcycle accident
A 64-year-old Xaghra resident from Germany died after crashing into a pole while riding a Yamaha motorcycle. The accident occurred at 8.30pm at Marsalforn Road, Zebbug, Gozo. A medical team attempted to assist the man, but he was declared dead on site.
25 May: Nursing aide Joseph Grech dies, woman injured, after being hit by ambulance
A Maltese man from Cospicua, aged 48, and a Romanian woman from St Paul's Bay, aged 54, were hit by an ambulance driven by a 36-year-old man from Zejtun. The accident occurred near the Mater Dei Hospital.
The man hit by the ambulance, a nursing aide named Joseph Grech, was certified dead on site, and the woman was taken to hospital for treatment.
27 June: Gozitan biker dies in hospital after motorcycle crash
A 61-year-old man from Zebbug, Gozo, passed away in hospital after being seriously injured in a motorcycle accident which occurred on 19 June at around 4.30pm. The man was injured after crashing into barricades along Triq il-Marfa in Cirkewwa while riding his Honda motorcycle.
29 June: Italian woman dies after quadbike falls off cliff
A 31-year-old Italian woman was found dead in the sea after a quadbike she was on, which was being driven by a 47-year-old Italian man, fell off a cliff after the driver lost control.
The man managed to jump to safety and was taken to the Gozo hospital, but the woman fell off the cliff into the sea and was later found dead. The accident took place at Triq Wied il-Mielah in Gharb, Gozo, at 8pm.
15 July: English man dies after car overturns in Naxxar
A 52-year-old English man from St Paul's Bay died after losing control of the Ford Ka he was driving and hitting a small wall in front of a house, resulting in his car overturning with the impact. The accident took place at 6pm at Katakombi Street. He was certified dead on site.
27 August: 3 traffic deaths on the same day from different accidents
Ganesh Bakra was taken to hospital with serious injuries and died some time later.
The accident occurred in Qormi, at L-Isqof Scicluna Street, at 1.45pm. Buttigieg was certified dead on site.
Robles was a passenger on the motorcycle, as the other woman was driving. The accident took place in Tabija Street, Rabat, at 10.45pm.
14 September: Gildave Spiteri, 21 years old, dies in traffic accident
Gildave Spiteri, a 21-year-old man from Zabbar, died in a traffic accident when he lost control of the Peugeot 206 he was driving and crashed into a parapet wall of a residence. The accident occurred at 7.45am in Triq il-President Anton Buttigieg, Zejtun. A medical team was called and took Spiteri to the Mater Dei Hospital, where he died shortly after.
5 October: Man dies in Marsascala traffic accident
A 64-year-old man, a resident of Marsascala, died after he was hit by a Ford Transit being driven by a 49-year-old man from Fgura. The accident happened in Sant'Antnin Road at 11.30pm. The man was taken to hospital, where he died some time later.
14 December: Man dies three days after bike crashes into skip
A motorcyclist who was seriously injured on 11 December on the St Paul's Bay by-pass died in hospital three days later.
The biker, an English man aged 54 of Mellieha, crashed into a skip. The man, named as Dieter Vink, lost control of his Honda motorcycle and crashed into a skip which was stationary in the street.
24 December: Bus driver dies a day after St Julian's accident
On Christmas Eve, bus driver Hussain Shah, 37, a Pakistani who resided in Marsascala, died a day after being seriously injured when the bus he was driving was involved in a collision with a van on Regional Road, St Julian's.
